Jay Singh - Indian Man

Jay is a Bristol based producer who began his musical journey exploring his Punjabi Indian roots, blending them into a melting pot of melodic magic by merging the music of his childhood with UK Dub, Garage and Jungle. Over the past four years, it’s been a real privilege to collaborate and document the wide range of projects he has going on. I’ve produced visuals for his EP, a Kickstarter film for his upcoming recipe book Cook Like My Indian Grandma, and a series of breakdown videos—filmed at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios—where he shares the stories and techniques behind his incredible music.

Grandma’s House Album Artwork

For Jay’s album Grandma's House, we revisited his childhood bedroom, where his music production journey began. Living with his Grandma deeply influenced him and his music - from hearing her singing traditional Indian lullabies, to her amazing cooking aromas filling the house, as well as her caring spirit - as we found out from filming the mini-doc, Jay thought he was going to live with his Grandma to look after her, but it turned out she was looking after him and was teaching him! She said, he had become more “Indian Man” after living with her.

Grandma’s House, is an album which reflects that influence and so it was important that the Album artwork captured Jay and his Grandma’s special connection and the house as well. We used a mixture of 35mm film and digital to capture a mix of nostalgic and present feeling.

Cook Like My Indian Grandma Crowd-funder film

It was a joy to meet and film with Jay’s grandma. A kind soul who won’t let you leave unfed, this was a real heartwarming shoot. I used Contax zeiss prime lenses which truly captured the colour of her home, with the help of some film emulation to give it a nostalgic feel.

The Crowdfunder is halfway there raising £4,600 so far. If you feel like it show it some love and receive a copy of the recipe book!
